Shangri-La Tiger Leaping Gorge

The scenic area of Tiger Leaping Gorge in Shangri-La is "one of the ten most beautiful gorges in China". It is located in the southeast of Shangri-La City, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, close to National Highway 214, 98 km from downtown Shangri-La, and 86 km from Lijiang City, as a famous natural scenic area of gorge with rapids.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge is 23 km in length and 213 m in drop within 20 km. The elevations of the Yulong Snow-covered Mountain and Haba Snow-covered Mountain on the two banks are 5,596 m and 5,396 m, respectively, while upstream and downstream gorge mouths of the gorge are 1,600 m and 1,813 m, respectively, namely more than 3,900 m different between the highest and the lowest places, hence a world-class gorge like the Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon in Tibet and the Colorado Grand Canyon in the United States. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is named after the legend of a tiger leaping across the river by a rock at the center of water. It runs between Haba Snow-covered Mountain and Yulong Snow-covered Mountain, with 18 dangerous rapids, only a little over 20 m at the narrowest place. The Gorge attracts a large number of Chinese and foreign tourists with its high cliffs, deep valleys, deep waters, many rapids, turbulent water, and rugged scenery.

Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge With steep peaks towering on both sides of the banks and extremely narrow river, a 13-m boulder magnificently stands at the center of water. The river concentrates at and falls from both sides of the boulder with great turbulence in the valley and river, roaring and threatening like a tiger. It is the section of river with the most turbulence, where a huge rock stands. According to the legend, a tiger jumped across the gorge by the rock, which was then named as Tiger Jumping Rock later. Traffic：

1. Shuttle bus from Shangri La and Lijiang: the first bus departs at 7:10 a.m. every day, and then every half hour until the last bus at 17:40 p.m.

2. Shuttle bus from Shangri La city and Xiaguan City: the first bus departs at 7:00 a.m. every day, and then every half hour until the last bus at 19:30 p.m.

3. Shuttle bus from Shangri La and Kunming: the first bus departs at 13:00 p.m. every day, and then one bus every hour until the last bus at 19:30 p.m.; in addition, there is a express bus departing at 9:00 p.m. every day.

4. The above buses must go through Hutiaoxia town.

5. Warm tip: there is no shuttle bus in the scenic area. After the ticket is collected, tourists can drive or take a taxi (legally operated car) to the scenic area.
