Ticket to Baishuitai

Baishuitai is located in Baidi Village, Sanba Township, Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, 2,380 m above sea level. It is China’s largest cold spring freshwater carbonate sinter terrace. With ground covered with calcium carbonate, a lava terrace is created in various interesting shapes. Its mantle forms staggered terraced fields, known as Immortal Heritage Field or Bapanzhao in Naxi language, which means sinter terrace changing and growing over time. The spring platform was formed about 200,000-300,000 years ago, up to 214 m thick.

Baishuitai, a famous tourist attraction in Northwest Yunnan since ancient times, is the cradle of Dongba culture of Naxi nationality. It is said that the founder of Dongba religion, dongbashro, once practiced preaching here. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the priests of Dongba in Baidi, such as Amin Yule, promoted the formation and improvement of Dongba religion by sorting out characters, scriptures and regulating religious rituals. Baishuitai area has become a famous holy land of Dongba religion due to the extremely prosperous Dongba culture in history. On the eighth day of the second lunar month, the residents gather at Baishuitai for sacrifice, worship, singing and dancing, which is a grand gathering of Naxi traditional culture.
