Hiking Route for Tiger Leaping Gorge
The Scenic Area of Tiger Leaping Gorge is located in Hutiaoxia Town, Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, 98 km away from Shangri-La and 90 km from Lijiang. It is a gorge formed by the Jinsha River going between Haba Snow-covered Mountain and Yulong Snow-covered Mountain at 5,596 m and 5,396 m above sea level, respectively. It is 23 km long, 213 m in drop, only over 20 m at the narrowest point, and 3900 m in elevation difference between the gorge bottom and mountain top. Tiger Leaping Gorge is famous for its majesty, oddness, precipitousness, and cragginess, as the main component of the World Natural Heritage, Three Parallel Rivers, and national 4-A tourist attraction. The scenic area includes the upper, middle, and lower Hutiaos as well as the high hiking route known as “one of the top ten classic hiking routes in the world." It is also the fourth largest gorges in the world, the second largest in China, and one of the ten most beautiful ones in China. According to legend, the tiger down mountain once jumped to the opposite bank with a boulder in the middle of water, after which the Tiger Leaping Gorge is named.
